Leon Levin history and vintage pictures

In 1929 ladies sportswear was breaking new ground as trousers and shorts, socially acceptable and comfortable to wear, became the new wardrobe favorites. Leon Levin was at the front of this new fashion trend and began to establish a legacy of quality and consistency that is still running strong 75 years later.

Imported linen from Ireland and England hit the American fashion scene in 1939. Again, Leon Levin was in front of the trend with a rainbow of bright spring colors that were featured in all the leading Fifth Avenue department stores. One prominent retailer devoted an entire New York City block of windows to an exclusive presentation of the Leon Levin linen collection. Women began to play golf in large numbers in the 1960's which led to the development of the famous Leon Levin "Q" skirt or "skort" which offered the freedom of shorts and soft lines of a skirt. It became an immediate favorite on the Ladies Professional Golf Tour. The defining moment in the history of Leon Levin came in the late 60's with the introduction of the signature "hard collar yoke front" polo shirt.

This exceptional shirt has become a fashion icon over the years and remains an American favorite. Its popularity continues to grow and today we offer our classic polo shirt 19 colors and a fresh new palette as the seasons change colors. The Levin legacy of innovation and newness continues to this day with introduction of our new Weekend casual lifestyle collection. Led by director of design, Kathy Fogarty, the Levin design team is once again creating a buzz in the industry with their latest interpretation of today's casual fashion trends.
